With elections just a little over a week away, the good folks at the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) just released their first-ever “US Governors Scorecard.” NORML has assigned a letter grade ‘A’ through ‘F’ to every state governor based upon his or her comments and voting records specific to matters of marijuana policy.

Wisconsin’s Gov. Scott Walker, who is not up for reelection until Nov. 2018, received a “D” from NORML. While many, myself included, would have flunked him, NORML found a couple dim points of light to justify their D.

The first was his signing of the 2014 CBD law, which they note is basically symbolic. They note comments Walker made in 2014 to Milwaukee news station WITI: “I don’t think you’re going to see anything serious anytime soon here, but if other states did, maybe in the next Legislative session there’d be more talk about it. It may be something that resonates in the future, but I just don’t see any movement for it right now.”

But they also cite his fixation that cannabis is a “gateway” drug, which he believes because he says police have told him so. They note Walker also rejects the notion that marijuana is safer than alcohol, citing his comments that Walker thinks “it’s a big jump between someone having a beer and smoking marijuana.”
