Six more Wisconsin county boards will be voting Aug. 21 on placing cannabis advisory referendums on their Nov. 6 ballots. Never before in Wisconsin history have six county boards convened to vote on cannabis advisory referendums on the same day. The six counties voting will be Langlade, Fond du Lac, Marquette, Forest, Eau Claire and Kenosha. Racine county votes Aug. 28, the final day to qualify for the Nov. 6 ballot. Nine other counties previously approved cannabis advisory referendums.

Marquette County is the latest county considering a medical cannabis advisory referendum. Marquette supervisors will be among counties voting Aug. 21. (Details below) Meanwhile, word out of Door County indicates that supervisors will not be pursuing a referendum and nothing has been formally introduced there.

The first board voting on Aug. 21 is Langlade County, meeting at 9am at 840 Clermont St, Antigo in the County Board Room on the lower level. The proposed Langlade County question is “Should the State of Wisconsin allow individuals with debilitating medical conditions to use and safely access marijuana for medical purposes, if those individuals have a written recommendation from a licensed Wisconsin physician?”

At 6pm Aug. 21, the Fond du Lac County board will consider the advisory referendum proposal from Supervisors Mary Hayes and Lisette Aldrich in their meeting in the Legislative Chambers of the City-County Government Center at 160 S Macy St, Fond du Lac.

Also on Aug. 21, the Marquette County proposal, Resolution No. 53-2018, will be introduced on Aug. 21st at the board’s 6pm Executive Committee meeting and if adopted, taken up by the full board at their meeting starting at 7pm. Both meetings are open to the public and will happen at the Marquette County Courthouse/Law Enforcement Center, Public Safety Room in Montello, Wisconsin.

Eau Claire County supervisors will vote at 7pm Aug. 21 at 721 Oxford Ave, Eau Claire in Room 1277. Cannabadger spoke with the referendum sponsor, Sup. Gerry Wilkie. Wilkie told us he is optimistic the board will vote to approve, despite the expected absence of two Administrative committee members who voted in favor. 27 board members are expected to be present. Wilkie’s resolution passed both the Administrative and Judicial Law committees, both on which he serves. He said the referendum is not a position statement by the board and while the public can speak in favor of cannabis legalization, board members can only speak to the referendum itself. The referendum question gives voters three choices.

In Forest County, the northernmost county of the 20 counties who have discussed cannabis advisory referendums, the board meets at 7pm Aug. 21 at 200 E Madison St, Crandon to consider a medical cannabis referendum. The proposed wording is: “Should the State of Wisconsin allow individuals with debilitating medical conditions to use and safely access marijuana for medical purposes, if those individuals have a written recommendation from a licensed Wisconsin physician?” Supporters are confident both Forest and adjacent Langlade counties will vote in favor.
The last county voting on Aug. 21 will be Kenosha County where the board meeting begins at 7:30pm at 1010 56th St, Kenosha. The resolution sponsor, District 10 Sup. Andy Berg, requested the delay to the Aug. 21 meeting, as he was serving on military duty and wanted to be present for the final vote.

The Board’s Legislative committee previously debated the medical advisory referendum July 17, and voted to send it to the full board by a 4-3 margin. The proposed question to be asked Kenosha County voters is “Should the State of Wisconsin allow individuals with debilitating medical conditions to use and safely access marijuana for medical purposes, if those individuals have a written recommendation from a licensed Wisconsin physician?”

Finally on Tuesday Aug. 28, Racine County will vote on the cannabis advisory referendum sponsored by Supervisors Fabi Maldonado and Nick Demske at 6:30pm at 14200 Washington Ave., Sturtevant.
