Cannabis legalization advisory referendum update: Rock County approves, other counties moving forward

On Thursday, June 28, the Rock County Board voted 14-12 to place a cannabis legalization advisory referendum on Nov. 6 Rock County general election ballots.

The Rock County question will read:

"Should cannabis be legalized for adult use, taxed and regulated like alcohol, with the proceeds from the taxes used for education, healthcare and infrastructure?"

On Monday, June 18, 2018, the St. Croix County Board's Administration Committee voted 4-1 to send a three-part referendum on marijuana legalization to the full Board of Supervisors for a vote at their Aug. 7 meeting. After some debate, committee members approved the following language for the advisory referendum, which includes recommended language from the Wisconsin Justice Initiative:

"Should cannabis: (Please select only one of the alternatives below or your vote will be invalid) (a) Be legal for adult use, taxed and regulated like alcohol, with the proceeds from the taxes used for education, healthcare, and infrastructure in Wisconsin? (b) Be legal for medical purposes only and available only by prescription through a medical dispensary? (c) Remain a criminally illegal drug as provided under current law?"

On Monday, June 25, 2018: At their monthly meeting in Wausau, the Marathon County County board's Health and Human Services Committee passed a resolution for an advisory referendum on legalizing medical marijuana on the November ballot on a 4-1 vote. . The full board will take up the issue in July.

The proposed question would read:

Should the State of Wisconsin allow individuals with debilitating medical conditions to use and safely access marijuana for medical purposes, if those individuals have a written recommendation from a licensed Wisconsin physician?
