Activists with Decriminalize Oshkosh have exceeded the number of signatures needed for their direct legislation campaign to reduce local cannabis possession fines as the end of the 60-day effort approaches.

Earlier today, Cannabadger reached out to Mark Kelderman, who has been spearheading both this campaign and the earlier one in which the city attorney rejected signed petitions over their format.

Kelderman says campaigners had a current total of 3,830 signatures earlier today, exceeding the 3,643 needed under Wisconsin Statute 9.20 to force direct legislation. He also noted signature gathering will end Sunday Nov. 5th, with petitions submitted to Oshkosh city officials on Monday, Nov. 6.

“With 8 days left to petition, community support is strong and our petitioners are determined to collect signatures right up to the wire. It should be abundantly clear to Oshkosh City Council members that the community wants this petition to succeed and we remain determined to see that happen,” Kelderman told Cannabadger.

Petitioning began September 7th. The campaign’s goal is reducing penalties for first offense simple possession of 25 grams or less of cannabis to a $25 fine in Oshkosh.
